The Environmental Protection Agency took
action approximately 25 years ago to phase out R-22 refrigerant in accordance
with The Clean Air Act. The phase out began by reducing the availability of
R-22 refrigerant and HVAC systems that use R-22. Each year the availability of
R-22 Freon has been reduced and will cease completely by year 2020. At that
point the only R-22 that we will have access to is reclaimed and recycled R-22.
Additionally, HVAC systems that use R-22 have not been manufactured since 2010.
What does this mean
to you?
Reduced availability means higher repair
costs if you have a system that uses R-22. Your system should have sufficient
R-22 unless it develops a leak. Since supply is limited, costs to charge
existing units have increased significantly and will continue to escalate. If
you have an older R-22 system, it is wise to consider a newer, more efficient
alternative before you are faced with an unexpected costly repair. The TRANE® systems today are much more efficient
and use environmentally-friendly 410A refrigerant. It is a win-win! You can
save energy dollars and protect the environment at the same time. The energy
savings, tax credits and rebates aid, in many cases, to justify the expense.
